The Archbishop of Johannesburg has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic road accident near Vanderbijlpark in South Africa’s Vaal region, in which several schoolchildren lost their lives while travelling to school on 17 January 2026.
In a message of condolence, Cardinal Stephen Brislin described the deaths of the children as “a grief beyond words”, saying the tragedy “wounds our hearts and shakes us to the core.” Writing on behalf of the clergy, religious, and faithful of the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg, he extended prayers and sympathy to the families, school communities, and all those affected.
According to reports from local authorities, a scholar transport minibus collided head-on with a truck on the R553 near Vanderbijlpark, a busy commuter route south of Johannesburg. Emergency services confirmed that several pupils were declared dead at the scene, with others later dying in hospital as a result of their injuries. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
Reflecting on the loss, Cardinal Brislin emphasised the dignity and preciousness of each child. “Children are a precious gift from God, bearers of hope, promise, and joy,” he said, adding that the sudden loss of young lives leaves families and communities confronting “the mystery of such suffering.”
Addressing grieving parents directly, the Cardinal assured them of the Church’s closeness and prayerful support. “Please know that the Church grieves with you,” he wrote. “We hold you close in our prayers, asking the Lord to grant you strength in your sorrow, comfort in your pain, and the assurance that your children now rest in the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father.” He recalled the words of Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.”
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, alongside renewed calls for stronger safety measures and accountability in learner transport. Government officials, including South Africa’s Ministers of Basic Education and Transport, have expressed condolences and underscored the need for stricter enforcement of transport regulations and improved safety standards for vehicles carrying schoolchildren.
In his letter, Cardinal Brislin also remembered in prayer those injured in the accident, witnesses to the crash, and emergency personnel who responded at the scene. He noted that one of the children who died was a member of the Catholic Church in the Vaal Deanery, a loss felt deeply within the local Catholic community.
Concluding his message, the Cardinal entrusted the deceased children to God’s mercy. “May Christ, who said, ‘Let the little children come to me,’ receive these young souls into His eternal peace,” he prayed, invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Sorrows, for all who mourn.
